元データはBereau of Labor StatisticsのVolunteering on the rise: September 2008-September 2009だ。人口の26.8%がボランティアに参加しており、これは大体6,340万人ほどになる。2007年から上昇基調だ。不況のせいと考えられるが、参加が増えているのは不況による失業の比較的少ない女性で（注）、男性は横ばいとのこと。
参加しているボランティアの種類はパイチャートになっている：
宗教（Religious）が1/3以上を占めており印象的だ。
Among all volunteers, the demographic group most likely to report that they mainly volunteer for their religious organizations were those without a high school diploma. Among volunteers who didn’t graduate from high school, 47.1 percent say that they mainly volunteer for a religious organization.
宗教をボランティアの対象と選んだ人の割合は高校を卒業していない層で最も高く、なんと47.1%にのぼっている。日本で似たような統計はあるのだろうか。
（注）In a First, Women Surpass Men on U.S. Payrollsによると、史上始めて給与所得者数で女性が男性が上回ったとある。これは男性の方が景気に左右されやすい業種についているということもあるが、男女差が消滅しつつあるのは事実だ。
